Saint Lawrence (Laurence) O'Toole was born in Ireland. At the age of 10 he was taken as a hostage by the King of Leinster, but was eventually raised by the Bishop of Glendalough. When the Bishop died, Lawrence was elected Abbot of the monastery of Glendalough. He ruled the abbey with prudence and charity. In 1161, he was elected metropolitan See of Dublin, which required him to undertake diplomatic missions to King Henry II of England. While on mission, as he was saying Mass, a crazed man attacked him, splitting his head open. St. Lawrence asked for water, blessed it, poured it on his head, and was healed. He continued with the Mass. He died while on a later diplomatic mission in England and was buried in Normandy.
